Wonderful, Liv. You opened a portal into a world familiar, yet not known. The cadence of voice and dancing strings of descriptions were seductive. Pulled me in.

It made me think of my own family during that time in America—people of means, generations between wars, and swept up in the changes of a new century. My grandmother, then a young wife to a wealthy man, 30 years her senior, born in the Civil War, used to tell stories of sneaking out with her girlfriends to dance and laugh and live a little—just like this.

Oh Paula, thank you! What a lovely thing to have sparked a connection to your grandmother - and what an interesting life she must have led!

I was taken completely inside this story, it reflects a unique sense of time and place but is also timeless in the contrast between youth and age, innocence and experience. The title is such a clever choice for both the use of language and the subject. Liv, glad you submitted it!

Beautiful story. Wondering why they didn’t drive their mom, only the dad? Probably because even daughters didn’t understand how they, young women now, would get old and tired too

I'm so glad you enjoyed it, BettyJoyce! It was those naughty Cambridge boys who put the dad in the car - they were too well-mannered to hustle a lady in there :)
