First Place
Surrey League, Match Four, Lloyd Park
by Madeleine Armstrong
Our judges loved how this piece beautifully captures the intensity of competition and the complexity of emotions that can arise from rivalry, blending physical struggle with subtle romantic tension. Alongside this strong narrative tension it gives a satisfying surprise ending.
Second Place
Why It Was Me That Ended Up Being Raised by a Wolf and Not My Twin Wolf-Sisters
by Anne Howkins
The judges chose this story because it shows a haunting blend of abandonment, survival, and belonging. They loved the use of vivid and raw imagery to evoke the tension between human and animal instincts. The writer made the brave choice of writing the whole piece in one sentence and that choice paid off well. It was a gripping and dramatic story with memorable descriptions.
