First Prize
Things My Teenage Son Tells Me About What Happened That Day, on the Top Deck of the Number 22
by Mairead Robinson
The judges felt this was a really powerful take on the theme that gets to the heart of the truth of being human - we can never really know if what others tell us is true. They loved the images the rainbow spilled pens and the starkness of their beauty against what became of the girl who owned them.
Second Prize
On Lying Down and Looking Up
by Salena Casha
The judges said this was beautifully described, especially the details such as the 'linted feathers' and 'sifting feathered dust', which effectively contrasted the vulnerability of the victim with the harsh approach of the interviewers. The lovely language and imagery with the final image of snow angels in the dust lingering in the mind really stuck with the whole team.
